Baby boomers, we are sorry to be the ones to tell you this but enough is enough. The following things that you love so much were never that great. It is personally not surprising that they are now becoming obsolete. We are sure that it is not easy to accept that this is the case. You might even feel dissatisfied and upset with what we have to say. There is a reason the younger generations no longer find them necessary or useful in the same what that you did. It is high time to say goodbye to these things. You know what they like to say: out with the old, and in with the new! Keep reading to see what simply doesn’t hold up these days.
Let us face it. Cursive is not particularly useful to anyone. Sure, it might look appealing, but is it really worth our time to get it right? We are sure that youngsters have much better things to do than practice their Qs and Ps. Oh well, we at least have to thank this practice for giving us ideas on our signatures.
What is the point of buying expensive plates if you are not going to use them at all? It feels like a waste of space to simply store something like these things. Some might even say that they are not even all that attractive in the first place. No one really notices them unless they shatter to pieces.
24-Hour News Networks
It feels like baby boomers like to call everything, “Fake news!” They might want to yell that at 24-hour news networks instead. Nowadays, it can be hard to fill a whole hour of programming with newsworthy events. What do they have to report 24 hours a day every day? If you ask us, these news outlets rely too heavily on scare tactics and sensationalism. Hard pass on this one, folks.
There is a saying that goes, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” In reality, we have become aware that they are very expensive for no good reason. Even worse, the industry is built on the backs of modern-day slaves. Cubic zirconia is a nice alternative that offers a lot of colors and styles to choose from.
Doesn’t it feel like every old house has there did not make it out alive without patterned wallpaper horror stories? The younger generations no longer appreciate all the busy patterns. In fact, they think that it is tacky. A pleasant paint color is the way to go. It is a much easier way to decorate your walls too.
“You are being paid in experience,” says companies that offer unpaid internships to people with little to no work experience in the past. As we all know by now, experience is not going to pay the bills. Very few people remain willing to work for hours on end without getting properly compensated for their effort. We bet that you have a lot of family money if you do not mind this one. Otherwise, we do not see much of a difference between this practice and modern-day slavery.
In 2002, we were introduced to boating shoes called Crocs. This type of footwear became an instant hit in the United States. The revolting shoes proved more popular than the average pair of boating shoes. We also appreciate that they are easy to slip on. They are comfortable; we will give them that. However, it is way too hard to wear them with anything and look presentable at the same time.
Blaming Millennials For Everything Every Time
Baby boomers have been hating on millennials for quite some time now. They like to call the members of the younger generation “snowflakes” who “can’t take a joke.” It is high time that they take a good look at themselves before calling us “whiny” all because we no longer have the same habits and beliefs.
Home Shopping Channels
Most people now understand that home shopping channels are simply a ruse to sell us cheap, useless items that we do not need. No one wants to watch TV for this when online shopping offers us a better alternative. You should just skip the QVC middleman and get your products from the source itself.
This item of clothing first came into fashion several decades ago. It has recently become fashionable yet again, but you might want to leave it in the darkest parts of your closets regardless. Sorry, but it will no longer look good on you unless you are thin as a stick! And let us face it, most of us are not.
Do you pay for your things with checks? In case you did not know, you are only making the queue longer by doing so. It is so much easier and more convenient to bring a small card instead of a huge wad of checks. On top of that, it gets even more annoying if you use personalized checks. There is nothing quite like paying for your colonoscopy with a slip of paper that has kittens and puppies all over.
You must be young if you do not know what a landline is. In the past, phones had to be plugged into the wall! At the moment, you can get it for free with your internet or telecom provider. However, they are pretty much obsolete no matter how you look at them. You can do anything it can with a smartphone.
We are just glad that people are now starting to understand how bad fossil fuels are. Not only does it do irreversible harm to the atmosphere, but oil wars have yet to stop. Scientists and experts are now looking into clean energy alternatives. We support this as they will be a lot better for the environment.
Don’t you feel anxious as you walk around in malls? There is no longer any need to visit these complexes since we can buy everything online. This is far more convenient since we receive the products on our doorsteps as well. On top of that, you do not need to inconvenience your spouse anymore by making them wait for hours on end as you look for the perfect shoe! It is a win-win for everyone involved.
Khaki Capri Pants
Sorry to break it to you, but these things never looked good. Capris already push the limit, but the khaki material just makes it worse. Honestly, we have no idea why anyone would think that these things look good in the first place. They do not look flattering on any body type, so you are best off simply getting a different pair of trousers.
Before anything else, we want to say that we adore denim. Even so, it is always to practice moderation when it comes to things that you love. It does not seem like baby boomers understand this. You can be the descendant of Levi Strauss, but there is no way you can make an all-denim outfit look good.
We concede that Jell-O tastes pretty good. However, it is pretty disgusting when you mix it with tuna, ham, and cheese. Why did people think this was a good idea back in the ‘70s? In those days, everyone added everything to gelatin. It is a good thing that this trend is finally dying out for good. Whew.
Does your family own a set of encyclopedias? A lot of folks bought theirs from door-to-door salespeople. This used to be a must-have in any home at one point in time. They are no longer as popular now that we have Google whenever we need to look something up. On top of that, they take up a lot of space.
Socks And Sandals
This is another trend that we would be happy to never see again. Baby boomers used to rock white socks and sandals like no one else. We love sandals because you do not need to wear socks with them. If you ask us, this fad just defeats the purpose. This is only going to make others wonder if you are trying to hide your feet because there is something wrong with them. Just go and wear nice old shoes instead!
Nowadays, people think that a phone book is nothing but a waste of paper. Do you feel the need to get in touch with someone? You can probably find their contact information online. We do not even remember the last time we have seen a phone book in person. It feels like a relic of times gone by.
If you want to share your age with the rest of the world, get a shag carpet. We were never big fans of the way it looked. On top of that, it felt odd to stand on top of it. Keeping it clean must have been such a hassle too. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this does not come back in style any time soon.
This is something that we did not ever understand either. Why did people feel the need to put on visors when they could have just used hats instead? These things did not look very nice nor did they prevent the inevitable bedhead. There is already plenty of perfectly good headwear out there. If your goal is to keep your face out of the sun, they should do the job just fine.
Fuzzy Toilet Seat Covers
First of all, it never feels right to use a toilet with a fuzzy seat cover. We do not know about you, but our first reaction is that it is a breeding ground for bacteria. On top of that, they must be a pain to clean. You might think that this will make your bathroom seem more luxurious, but it is not worth it.
It is pretty unbelievable that record players and tapes are available in Walmart and Target once more. They are getting popular among the youngsters in this day and age! We will give the older folks this one. There is nothing quite like listening to records in the age of streaming. These things are the bomb.
Baby boomers are not big fans of skinny jeans. They much prefer bootcut and flared jeans since they are typically comfier. “Everything comes back into style at some point,” goes a popular saying. We do not know about you, but skinny jeans are where it is at. They look flattering on just about any body type. On top of that, they are much easier to style as well!
It is only natural for clothes to wrinkle no matter how careful you are. There was a point in time when people ironed their clothes before they put them on. However, kids these days do not have time for this. It is no longer important for them to look polished and groomed. Who has the time for that?
Compared to liquid soap, people find bar soap filthy and hard to use. No one wants to pick up a bar of soap after it slipped through your fingers in the shower. Baby boomers should keep this in mind! After all, can they really afford to bend down and pick it up now that they have weak hips and knees?
A lot of baby boomers grew up on meatloaf. Many of them continue to eat this to this day. However, the members of the younger generation are not big fans of it. They think that it looks disgusting. It is even worse when they slather ketchup on top of it. As you can see, this is something that belongs to the past!
We do not know about you, but we were never big on vests. There are plenty of patterned ones that no one should ever put on. They do not always look particularly nice. We are not going to judge anyone based on their clothes, but you are going to look older than your age with this on.
Once upon a time, it felt like there was nothing on TV but cop dramas! These shows were always absurd and exaggerated. Apart from that, we have lost track of them because there were so many. How many versions of the same show do we really need anyway? People hate them for being cop propaganda too.
In case you did not know, this man is not a celebrity. You should consider yourself lucky if you do not know who he is. This is the guy who says that water can turn frogs gay! This is a ridiculous claim, but will you believe us if we tell you that this is among the tamest things that Alex Jones has come up with?
It sure feels like there is an endless number of condiments in the world. This is good because you are never going to run out of options. If you want to spice up your dish, you can just use something other than this. You should trust us when we say that Mrs. Dash is becoming obsolete for a good reason.
All right. Allow us to explain what we mean by this. We agree that we should treat every single person in the world with basic decency and respect. This is not just some millennial hogwash. Baby boomers think that they are being politically correct by using outdated terms, but they should keep up with the times.
Sure, linoleum flooring might have looked nice when you first put it on. However, they fade and warp with the passage of time. Let us remember that it is basically just a sheet of plastic covering on the floor. They simply do not hold up after some time. It is much better to go with tile or wood flooring instead.
In case you did not know, The National Enquirer is not the best source of information. We can say the same thing about Alex Jones and Fox News. Conspiracy theories can be interesting, but you might want to do research of your own before you start spouting the same things that they say.
Most people now head to Sephora when they need to buy makeup. The drugstore offers a lot of decent options as well. In the past, Avon used to be a big name in cosmetics. It seems like more and more people are becoming warier of MLMs. Be careful when people ask you to join their get-togethers!
Some of you might think that this is pretty controversial. If you ask us, it does not make sense to gender colors. It is clear to us that this is just a societal construct. Little kids should be able to enjoy the things they want if it is not a threat to their safety. It is sexist to assign certain colors masculine or feminine. To play it safe, you can go with greens and whites instead of blues and pinks.
Is there a duller sport than golf out there? We dislike it for the back pain, the silly outfits, and its purpose as a display of social status. It is not a secret why youngsters do not appreciate it. On top of that, they have been making calls to turn all those green spaces into public parks instead.
Many Throw Pillows
Are your visitors already drowning in the throw pillows you have all over your couch? Don’t worry, we can add more to it. We have never really felt the need to have so many of these things. A few should be enough for just about everyone. We doubt that you have regular pillow fights on your schedule.
Giving Retail Workers A Tough Time
Do we really have to explain this one? There is absolutely no reason for a customer to yell at employees. This is an even sillier thing to do if there is nothing that they can do about it. Let us remember that it is not their fault if your voucher is expired or that you can’t afford any of the items. People no longer think that “the customer is always right” because the customer is always silly. Let us just be kind all the way!
Tuning Into ‘I Love Lucy’
Lucille Ball, in the role of Lucy Ricardo, ruled the world of television back in the ‘50s. She played a homemaker who often got into silly antics on I Love Lucy. The TV show is now considered a classic. From 1957 to 1960, we also got to see more of her on The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show. It feels like members of the younger generation no longer know who she was.
Witnessing The ‘Miracle On Ice’
In 2004, Miracle gave kids a recap of sorts. Despite this, there is nothing quite like watching “Miracle on Ice” with your own two eyes. The United States hockey team beat the Soviet Union in the Winter Olympics semifinals, which took place in Lake Placid on February 22, 1980. It was quite the feat!
Marveling At Electronic Calculators
Do you want to know how much technology has progressed over the years? You should know that people used to crunch numbers with the help of handhelds and slide rules. There was also a point in time when they thought that electronic calculators were the most amazing thing in the world. Whoa.
Playing With A Howdy Doody Doll
We first got to know the Howdy Doody puppet on NBC’s Puppet Playhouse all the way back in 1947. He went on to earn a show of his own. This was how he became a household name. As a matter of fact, he was so popular that they made a ton of merch about him, but kids no longer know who he is.
Have you ever read a copy of Reader’s Digest in the past? If this is the case, you probably learned a lot of things from it in the past! The magazine has been around for more than a century now. With the rise of internet journalism, fewer and fewer people are reading the publication. Too bad.
Dialing A Rotary Phone
These days, you only need to tap your screen to call someone. It was a lot more complicated than that in the past. For one thing, you had to put in a lot of time to dial in the number on a rotary phone. You are out of luck if the said number came with many zeros and nines! Kids should consider themselves lucky.
Smoking On Airplanes
It goes without saying that travel has changed a lot over the decades. Social customs have likewise taken different directions. We are sure that kids will not be able to believe that folks used to smoke on planes. This was only banned during the ‘90s because they learned that it would extend the life of a plane.
Eating Swanson TV Dinners
The truth is that you can still buy TV dinners if you really wanted to try them out. However, we have not heard much about them since the late ‘80s. Back then, they used frozen sweet potatoes, Thanksgiving turkey, and fresh spices to improve the flavor of the potato casserole mix and canned cornbread
Waiting For The Milkman
During the ‘60s, around one-third of milk was distributed to individual households. How amazing is that? Before that, it was not the most popular way to buy milk among customers. It is neat to think that only a few people still get their food delivered using those services. We would love for it to be popular again.
Seeing The TV Channels Sign Off
How often do networks use ending graphics at “post-prime time” hours? In this day and age, they are “almost nonexistent.” Most TV channels now run every single hour of the day! In case you did not know, they used to play the National Anthem once it was time to log off for the night.
Shopping At The Five-And-Dime Store
Before Amazon, Walmart, and Target, people did not have a lot of options when it comes to shopping. This is especially true in small towns. Back then, people could only go to five-and-dime stores. Even though the prices have changed significantly over the years, it is still possible to go to such places now.
Billboards About Tobacco
In the past, you could find cigarette ads on magazines, taxis, TV commercials, billboards, and more. You might even be familiar with the Marlboro guy, Joe Camel. We have all heard of the “It’s toasted” slogan as well. In the United States, smoking has gone down considerably in recent years. That’s a good thing!
The transistor radio became a thing of the past once we were introduced to the Walkman and MP3s. Despite this, they were everywhere back in the ‘60s and ‘70s. It was around for a very long time. This is the reason it is considered one of the most commonly used devices in the history of mankind.
The United States experienced a long gas shortage in 1973 and 1979. In those days, you would find lines over the lane. They even introduced odd-even rationing. This meant that you were only allowed to get gas on certain days of the week if your license plate ended in an odd number.
Using A Typewriter
It is very easy to type your messages now that we have personal computers. But in the past, people had to write their letters and documents with a typewriter. This can get complicated because the backspace button did not exist. If they mistyped even just one character, it is going to be obvious to the recipient.
What are jorts? This is what people like to call jean shorts, which were made by chopping off the legs of a pair of trousers. It is a term used to mock this unattractive garment for men. They looked even uglier when paired with Crocs! If you really want to go hard, you could even tuck your shirt in. Voila.
Have you ever played racquetball? Let us describe it to you in simple terms. It is a lot like tennis, but you play it inside a room instead of outside on the lawn. As you can imagine, those rooms tend to smell like sweat! We do not understand why anyone would prefer to inhale body odor when they can be breathing in the fresh air instead. Folks, there is nothing to be afraid of out there.
Ah, potpourri. It sure reminds us of visiting our grandparents. They were used to fill up containers that were used to carry various sums of money. This just hides the fact that there are only a few bills and quarters inside. The bowls might be shaped differently, but they all have the same smell. No, thank you.
All You Can Eat Buffets
Sure, it sounds like a good idea to offer unlimited portions of pancakes, steam, biscuits, and lobster under a heat lamp. However, our opinion on it changes once we think about it some more. On second thought, we would rather not risk a stomachache. A buffet is a terrible idea if you are on a diet.
It probably sounds like a foreign concept to hire a financial advisor. After all, millennials do not typically make enough money that they need someone else to tell them how to manage it. Aside from that, they prefer to do their own research when it comes to investment. Why trust a stranger with your money?
If you are going to travel somewhere far away, you should probably check out the local sights, food, and music. A cruise is not ideal for any of those things. It is basically a hotel on top of the sea that runs on a fixed schedule. You do not generally get to explore a destination for more than a few hours or days.
We agree that it would be good to save up for the future. However, retirement is the furthest thing on the minds of millennials. After all, they first have to pay off their massive student debt. As much as we want to focus on our future, it is hard to do when it feels like we will never stop working.
Experts say that millennials eat a wide variety of strange food. For one thing, they sure love their sprouted nuts and kombucha. This is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, they are known to be more focused on health as well. We doubt that anyone is going to die by eating a grapefruit-cabbage salad.
There is nothing quite like spending some time with one of these things in your hand. We all want to get our hands on some treasure, right? However, the truth is that you probably only found bottle caps in the backyard with these babies. Still, we can’t deny that it was a fun way to pass the time at the very least.
You can surf through channels on your TV with the help of a remote control. However, there was a time when you had to go up to the screen and flip through them with a knob! This was the norm for traditional TVs. We are glad that we can now do the same things from the comfort of our couch.
