To be honest, we are a bit bored with all the new generation of cars. Where did all the character and pizzazz of the good old days go? The truth is that this was not always the case. We were introduced to a lot of muscle cars, pony cars, and economy vehicles during this period. The luxury car scene was not afraid to try new things either! In the ‘60s, the Camaro became famous not just for its speed but also for its power. Dick Harrell was the drag racer who came up with it. Made for drag racing, it was equipped with a 427 cu in a V8 engine known as the ZL1. This powertrain gave this car as much power as it needed to become one of the best muscle cars in the United States. Another thing that makes it so special is its rarity. After all, Chevrolet only made 69 copies of this car! We are sure that you can see why this has become so popular.

The 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible boasted a convertible top and trademark suicide doors. This was one of the most unique cars to ever hit the market. However, engineers stumbled into a huge setback while they were working on its design. As they were examining the back seats, they kept kicking the rear doors. In an effort to solve this, they hinged the doors from the rear. This was how the iconic doors to be. It was the first American vehicle that came with a two-year, 24,000-mile warranty.

In 1962, the Buick Electra got a major makeover. There was only one thing about it that did not change – the signature “ventiports” of the company! Below the hood, it came with a 401 cubic-inch V8 engine that made it even more powerful. At the time, no one minded the lower MPG since gas cost around 31 cents per gallon. Buick kept the Electra in its lineup for over three decades and offered different body styles: sedan, coupe, station wagon, and convertible. In 1991, it was replaced with the Park Avenue.

1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible

Ford first introduced the Thunderbird in 1955. If you are a car lover, there is a good chance that your favorite one was the 1966 version. Its rear turn signals were integrated with the rear lighting system. They worked together and went well with the “low-slung styling” of the car. The Thunderbird was not really marketed as sporty. It was actually one of the first personal luxury offerings by the company. It was a luxurious convertible that was even featured in a 1991 movie called Thelma & Louise.

Make all the Looney Tunes jokes that you want. It would not change the fact that the Roadrunner Hemi is all about business. In the late ‘60s, it became a popular muscle car choice because it offered a back-to-basics package with everything that you could possibly want in a muscle car. The automaker marketed it for its performance and pretty much put styling intricacies on the sad. “Added options” to the interior was an alien concept to this car. Fun fact: Plymouth paid Warner Bros. $50,000 to use the name!

If you are a fan of Chevy, we bet that you are particularly in love with two versions of the Chevelle: 1967 and 1970. The latter, as shown below, was a revamped model. Its brochure said, “What you’ll see inside will probably bring on a severe compulsion to go driving.” This version came with a new dual master cylinder brake system that had front disc brakes. It had a redesigned rear and 14” wheels to go with these changes. Many thought it defined the muscle car era. The 1967 version was also a good-looking beast!

1969 Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet

Ford introduced an upgraded version of its beloved Mustang in 1969. We are talking about none other than the Mustang Cobra Jet! It was known as the model that could give the Camaro and Firebird a run for their money. It was equipped with a 428-ci V8 engine and bigger valve heads than usual. The Cobra Jet could reach up to 410 hp. It was remarkable since it ushered in more interest in the Ford Mustang. Needless to say, the company was able to turn the tide with the introduction of the 428 Cobra Jet.

1965 Shelby GT350

All the 1965 Shelby GT350 units were painted Wimbledon White and decorated with Guardsman Blue rocker stripes. At first, the battery of the car was located in the trunk. Customers complained about the smell of the fumes, so they changed it. This model only came with a single transmission: a four-speed Borg-Warner T10 manual. When it comes to the exhaust system, it had a side-exit dual exhaust and glass pack mufflers. You will have a hard time looking for a fully-equipped Shelby GT350 anywhere right now.

1960 Ferrari 250 PF Cabriolet

Ferrari released the 250 PF Cabriolet in 1960 in its mission to introduce something special to the market. The automaker did not want to simply follow in the footsteps of the other brands. This was the ideal car for touring. It was introduced as a car for people who wanted to take it on a road trip. The cars in the 250 series are known for their 3.0-L Colombo V12 engine that was designed by none other than Gioacchino Colombo. It was eventually discontinued and replaced by the Ferrari 275 and 330 series.

There was a time when everyone wanted to have a GT K-code Fastback in their own garage. It boasted a high-performance engine that could outrun any other vehicles. We are not surprised to hear just how popular it was! It is interesting to note that Ford took nine months off its warranty. We are sure that the automakers figured out that anyone who drove it would drive it hard and fast! On the order form, the K-code had an optional $276 package. This makes perfect sense to us.

In 1966, GM introduced the first pony car in its lineup. It was an instant hit among customers. GM was even offered to quality it for the TransAm racing series of Club of America. The only thing that GM and Chevy had to do was change the engine to 305 ci. It was a good thing that the automakers were more than glad to do that. If you ask us, the Javelin is one of the most unusual muscle cars out there. AMC made two generations of this model. They introduced the first one in 1968 and the latter version three years later. The biggest option for the engine was a 390-ci 6.4-L four-speed manual with 315 hp. It could go from zero to 60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds! The top speed is 122 miles per hour. In 1968, AMC made 6,725 of these babies.

The BMW 2002 paved the way for the company when it comes to its reputation for building combat sporty sedans. Without it, the automaker would not have built the BMW 3 and 4 Series. Whenever BMW offers a small two-door coupe, we can’t help but think back to the 2002 model of this vehicle. The truth is that the car made its debut in 1962, but BMW only applied the two-door coupe design in 1966. The result is a two-door sedan, which served as the basis of the 02 Series.

The 1960 300F must be the most dynamic version of the Letter series by Chrysler. This was the first in the series to come with a unibody construction, so it was both more rigid and lighter than the preceding models. On top of that, the car came with four-place seating. It also had a full-length center console that came with the power window switches. Another interesting feature of this model would be the front seats, which swiveled outwards when you open the doors. This made it easier to hop in and out!

This helped the car reach its top speed of 150 miles per hour.

We are not surprised to hear that it remains an automotive icon even to this day.

1963 Porsche 911

Porsche introduced the 911 in 1963. Since then, it has earned its position as one of the greatest sports cars in history. It has gone through seven different transformations and continues to be popular in this day and age. The automaker works hard to upgrade this car year after year, only altering it to improve its performance. The mechanical layout of this car is basically the same one that you will find in the first version that was introduced. On top of that, its profile still mimics the 1963 one nearly down to a tee!

In reality, the 1969 Triumph TR6 saw more success on the global stage than it did in its home country. The United Kingdom made up a tiny fraction of the total sales for this model! In the United States, this vehicle was fueled by a 2.5-L six-cylinder engine that could produce 104 hp. On the other hand, the English market version of the car could produce up to 150 hp! The rear wheels, on the other hand, was powered by a four-speed all-synchronous manual transmission.

At the turn of the decade, the Chrysler 300G Coupe got an upgrade. The company made the grille wider at the top, while the headlights were inwardly angled at the bottom. Its fins got sharper, while the rear lights were moved right below them. Below the hood, the cross-ram “long ram” and “short ram” engines stayed the same. However, they got rid of the expensive French manual transmission and replaced it with an even pricier Chrysler racing manual transmission.

When Studebaker debuted the Avanti, the automaker called it “America’s only four passenger high-performance personal car.” If you ask us, the best thing about it was that it combined performance and safety. It also broke 29 records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Sadly, the company was unable to deliver quality versions of it to the showroom floor. This is the reason the model was discontinued by the time December 1963 rolled in. Sadly, it was unable to compete with rival models by the time it returned.

If you are familiar with this car, it probably has something to do with the James Bond flicks. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Coupe is one of our favorite cars in the world. It came out in 1963 as a reimagining of the DB4 Series 5. Its first spy mission was in Goldfinger. The automaker and the movie studio worked together and put two of these on display at the World’s Fair to promote the upcoming film. It looked like it worked! The movie is one of the top-grossing titles in the series.

This personal luxury car was in production from 1966 to 1992. The Toronado has seen four generations. In order to fit into tight spaces, it was equipped with adopted torsion bars for its front suspension. Like other coupes out there, it had elongated doors that made it easier for passengers to go to the rear seats. It did pretty well in terms of sales. In 1966, the company made 40,963 units. It was marketed through TV commercials that feature John “Shorty” Powers, former NASA Project Mercury public affairs officer!

The 1963 Buick Riviera comes with a distinctive body shell unique to this marque. That makes it unusual as a GM offering. It was unveiled on October 4, 1962. This vehicle came with the standard Buick V8 engines and a unique variable design twin-turbine automatic transmission. Its suspension followed the standard design of the brand, with a live axle at trailing arms and double wishbones up front. This crisp ground-up concept was introduced to the world as the first unique Riveria design.

The 1964 Pontiac GTO deserves credit for the rise of the muscle car. It was originally just an option package of the Tempest, but it became a model of its own a couple of years later. The top of the line model offered 360 hp with 438 ft-lbs of torque. This model bagged the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 1968. We are truly sad that it failed to stay relevant in the ‘70s. This led Pontiac to discontinue it. In 2004, it was revived for a brief period of time. This version could go as fast as 200 miles per hour!

In 1965, the Chevy Impala got a complete redesign. This resulted in sales of more than a million copies in the United States! This model was equipped with a sharper-angled windshield and rounded sides. For the transmissions, you could have a two-range Powerglide, Synchro-Mesh 3-speed or 4-speed manual transmissions. Below the hood, you could choose between an inline six-cylinder with small-black or big-block V8 engines. Those who preferred automatic transmission could also go for the three-range Turbo Hydra-Matic or the Mark IV big-block engine. The abundance of options helped it become so famous.

The Buick Wildcat was not a part of the Invicta subseries anymore when it was produced from 1963 to 1970. However, it did launch its very own series. In 1996, the automaker released a Wildcat Gran Sport Performance Group package that was only around for a year. You could order it by picking the “A8/Y4” package. It came with two options for the engine. The regular option was a 425-ci V8 engine, but buyers also had the option to upgrade to a 360 hp dual-carb setup if they were willing to spend more money. Among the 1,244 units built in 1966, only 242 of those were convertible. All the others were hardtops.

The Yenko Super Camaro was developed by and named for Don Yenko, a dealership owner and racer. During the release of the original Camaro, it was not allowed to have an engine that was bigger than 400 ci 6.6-L V8 setup. This made it lag behind the other cars at the time. The 1969 model might have come with L72 engines, but the buyer also had the option to go for the Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic or M-21 four-speed transmission. The company made 201 copies of the 1969 model. It is interesting to note that nearly all of them had been equipped with the latter.

From 1950 to 1981, Chevrolet had the Bel Air in its lineup. The car has gone through a lot of changes over the years. Few of them were introduced to the 1964 version of the car. This was also its fifth generation. The car had a length of 209.9 inches. It had two different 327 CID engines that you could choose from. Even though it mostly stayed the safe as its predecessor, it did see renovations to the trim and sheet metal. On top of that, buyers could add a chrome belt line and a new exterior for $100.

1967 Oldsmobile 442

The Oldsmobile 442 is a muscle car made by Oldsmobile. It was produced between 1964 and 1980. Although it was originally an option package, the car became its own model from 1968 to 1971. The name 442 comes from the original car’s four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual transmission, and dual exhausts. For the 1968 model, the car had a top speed of 115 MPH with all standard 1968 442 engines painted bronze-copper and topped with a red air cleaner. 1968 was also the last year for the car having vent windows on both hardtops and convertibles.

1966 Toyota 2000GT

You are looking at a limited edition front-engine, two-seat hardtop from Toyota. Did you know that the automaker actually collaborated with Yamaha for this? It was first unveiled at the Toyota Motor Show in 1965. The car went into production from 1967 to 1970. It ended up changing how the world looked at the automotive industry of the Asian country. The 2000GT showed everyone that Japanese companies could make sports cars that were just as good as European ones. This model was even likened to the Porsche 911. When it was still in production, the automaker only made small changes to the original.

1962 Porsche 356B

Austrian carmaker Porsche Holding first made the Porsche 356, a task that was later taken on by the German automaker Porsche. It was first manufactured in 1948, which makes it the first production automobile of the company. This model was lightweight and came equipped with two doors, a rear-wheel drive, and a rear-engine. Buyers could pick between convertible or hardtop as well. The 1962 model went through various changes so that it would end up with a T6 body type and twin-engine lid grills, a bigger rear window, and an external front fuel filler. The Ghibli is the name of three separate vehicles from Italian automaker Maserati. We are here to talk about the 1969 model, which fell into the AM115 category. It was a powerful grand tourer that was produced between 1966 and 1973. It was a two-door 2+2 car with a V-8 engine. When Sports Car International came up with a list of the Top Sports Cars of the 1960s, it fetched the ninth spot. This car was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1966. Giorgetto Giugiaro had been the one to design it.

Ford produced the 1960 Ford Falcon from 1960 to 1970. It was a front-engine six-passenger vehicle that came with different options. For one thing, it was offered as four-door sedans and two-door convertibles alike. The 1960 model came with a 95 hp, 144 CID straight-six engine and a single-barrel carburetor. Aside from that, it was equipped with either a three-speed manual or two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. This car performed very well when it hit the market. Not only that, but variations of it had been produced in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, and Mexico as well.

The Mini Cooper was one of Britain’s greatest sports cars, a true icon that became the distinctive rally car of the ’60s. Its perfectly small size and great drivability allowed it to maneuver itself around bigger and wider cars. Ford Motor Campany launched The GT40 with the hope to win long-distance sports car races against the legendary car Ferrari. The GT40 managed to break Ferrari’s streak in 1966 and then successfully went on the win the next three annual Le Mans races. The first Ford GT 40 was created in May 1964, and in 1969 the last model year of the GT40 was made – its five-year run had managed to produce 107 cars.

The 1968 MG B is a two-door sports car that was manufactured by the British Motor Cooperation from 1962 until 1980. When the car was first introduced to the public, it was welcomed with open arms and much excitement. The MG B was capable of 120 mph (193 km/h) and a 0–60 mph time of 10.0 seconds. It was one of the best-looking, enjoyable cars to drive during the 60s.

1967 Lotus Elan

Lotus Elan is the name of two separate ranges of vehicles that were produced Lotus Cars. The first series of cars were produced between 1962 and 1975 as a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. In 2004, Sports Car International named the Elan number 6 on the list of  Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. In addition to that, The Elan was largely admired and commended by many customers and reviews, specifically for its excellent handling, road holding, steering, acceleration, braking, and comfort.

1969 Datsun 240Z

Towards the late 1960s, a new car was born – The Nissan S30 (Datsun 240Z) was the first generation of Z GT 3 door, two-seat coupe. It was considered one of the most successful sports cars ever produced. One of the major attractions of the car was its engine, it was able to travel at 125mph top speed and 8 secs 0-60mph time. People were soon enthralled by the Datsun 240Z – it was a terrific, quality-driven car.

The Jensen Interceptor is another awesome car from the mid-60s. Believe it or not but this car was actually hand-built near Birmingham in England between 1966 and 1976. If you’re looking to own one of these now, you better act fast there possibly only about 300 left in the world. The average price for the Jensen Interceptor is approximately $15 000.

1962 Shelby Cobra

Carroll Shelby’s 1962 Cobra produced one of the most awesome inventions the motor industry has ever seen. Believe it or not but the Shelby Cobra actually came about because of a dream, and the end was result was a super British-American sports car with a Ford V8 engine. The car was sold between 1962 and 1967 but went through a number of updates during those 5 years. However, it still remained a magnificent car!

Well, you are correct because Mercedes Benz produced a line of ultra-luxury cars between 1963 and 1981, and this beauty was one of the very first cars.
