You will read in this story how a group of fishermen made a shocking discovery that pushed the limits of their friendship and their personal boundaries. What was initially just a normal fishing trip immediately became a rescue mission when the fishermen saw that something alive was on top of an iceberg. They have shown how big their hearts are by taking action when others would have just ignored the situation. This story will surely make you believe in the innate goodness of man and will make you feel better about the world.

The Trio

Allan Russel, Cliff Russel, and Mallory Harrigan were close friends and they enjoy fishing together. So, it made perfect sense that they turned this hobby into a business. The three purchased their own fishing boat and started their own fishing company.

The Trio

The Trio

One Boat

It may be small, with only one boat and a three-man crew, but it was what they enjoyed doing. Since Canada is their homeland, they are already in a prime area for fishing. The three fishermen were already familiar with the kind of fish local to the area and what consumers like to buy.

However, they didn’t know what they would catch every time they headed out to sea. They didn’t expect it to be an easy task, but what they saw that day was something that they did not expect themselves.

Fishing Lifestyle

Fishing is one of the most demanding jobs on the planet. Fishermen get up incredibly early to plan and prepare everything for the difficult day at sea. They then spend as much time and energy as they can on the water to catch as many fish as they can. For the people who do this day to day, it’s a kind of life that they are used to. Despite the difficulty, these three absolutely love the time they spend on the water.

Fishing Lifestyle

Built On Friendship

Fishing is a serious business that could challenge even the strongest of friendships and it could have ended the friendship that the three had fostered for years. However, Allen, Cliff, and Mallory pushed through with their business plans and remained fast friends even after setting up their business. As a matter of fact, the fishing business seemed to have brought the three closer than before.

Job Duties

Their job often included long hours and sailing on difficult seas. They often come home in the evening with minor injuries, bumps, and bruises. Although they suffered a lot in their line of work, they still enjoyed what they were doing.

Hard At Work

Not one of them complained about the difficulties that they were going through during their fishing expeditions nor has the thought of quitting even crossed their minds. Their mutual love for each other and the work that they share motivates them to continue what they do every day, even though the work they do is grueling.

Morning

This story begins when Mallory and the rest of the crew set out early one crystal clear morning. The crab fishermen from Labrador, Canada, sailed through the harbor. To them, everything seemed as normal as any other day.

One Fine Day

That was a day that would leave a mark on their lives, and they didn’t know it. They were all preparing as usual for a day out on the sea. Out of the three, Mallory had a good feeling about the day, but she would have never guessed what she and her friends would find in the sea.

She woke up much earlier than usual and went out to prepare the boat before anyone else came to work for the day. She was cheerful and highly-motivated to start their trip by the time her friends joined her.

Lists

Once they had all gathered, they went through the list of things that they needed to do. This list was created to make sure they were safe during their fishing trip and to ensure that their emergency tools were ready if they needed them.

Preparation

If they forgot to prepare or do one thing on the list, it could mean longer hours at work as they would have to go back to the dock to fetch whatever was left behind. They didn’t want that to happen, so they worked hard to make sure that they got everything on their checklist before they started their work out in the sea.

Heading Out To The Sea

Preparing the boat was often the easiest part of their work. The three would often spend their time telling each other stories and joking around. Despite the fact that they practically knew each other forever, they still had a lot of things to talk about.

Heading Out

A New Day

Each morning would go on like they hadn’t seen each other for a long time and had a lot of things to discuss. This day was just like all others in that sense. The three of them worked hand in hand to get things in order, all the while laughing and chatting with each other. They had absolutely no clue what would happen to them that day.

The Calm Before The Storm

You could say that what happened next was just the “calm” before the proverbial storm. Even the water was so clear that morning. Their boat sailed to a perfect crabbing spot just off Canada’s coast. They had to sail for a few miles to reach it, but it was the most ideal place to find catch great crab.

The Calm Before The Storm

Dropping Their Baskets

Once they reached the said spot, they turned off their boat’s engine and stayed there. It had always been the perfect spot to catch crabs, and they were hoping that it would be the same for this day. They carefully prepared the pots for the crabs and threw them onto the ocean floor, where they were hoping a lot of crustaceans were at. All they needed to do then was wait.

Dropping Baskets

Record-Breaking Year

They needed to sit and allow the cages to drag along the ocean floor for some time to give the crabs time and room to climb in to get to their bait. Although it was almost the end of the crab season, the trio had high hopes in ending the season with a bang.

Out Of Luck

They have had a good run for a few weeks so far and had pulled plenty of crabs during their trips. However, they were worried that their luck might run out. They had a booming record for this year and they didn’t want it to change.

Omen In Crabs

The three shared the load by assigning one person to man the boat while the other two managed the lines and make sure that they were not tangled. It was their usual routine and they were well used to it. They were well on their way to getting their work done, with the cages safely in the water. What would happen next?

When the time came to pull out the cages, they were astonished. It was about to become their best day out in the sea! They shared high fives and dumped their catch in their boat. They threw the cages back into the water to repeat the whole process.

A New Fishing Spot

As they went on with their work during the day, the crabs continued to come. It was starting to look like a day that would break all their records. The three completed their work on the first spot they picked and chose to see if they would be luckier in another spot, in much icier waters. The farther out they went, the more dangers they would have to face.

Dangerous Waters

Even birds could not be seen this far out from the shore, but everything looked peaceful and calm. However, that wasn’t the case at all. Even the seals lounging on icebergs were aware of the potential dangers around them.

Dangerous Waters

One Wrong Turn

Many icebergs float around the Labrador Sea and the whole area can be very dangerous even for the most skilled and experienced fishermen. If the said fishermen took a wrong turn or missed a few vital details in their trip, it could cause their own death.

Something Up Ahead

Allan was on lookout duty when he spotted a massive iceberg ahead. As he was navigating around the massive piece of ice, something caught his eye. Although they were used to seeing icebergs every day on the water, this one was different. What could it be?

Screenshot 24

Something Up Ahead

Something Off

The sun was exceptionally bright that said day, making it even harder for the crew to get a good look at the massive thing in front of them. When the other two checked out what had caught Allan’s eye, they too noticed something off about this particular iceberg, but, none of them could figure out what it was.

The Iceberg Appears!

As they got closer, they were able to better make out what was in front of them. There was a dark spot on top of the iceberg, but it was still too difficult to make out from their distance. Mallory figured that it was just a seal trying to get some sun on top of the iceberg. However, something about the seal wasn’t quite right.

Taking A Closer Look

Cliff thought that Mallory was right and the creature on the iceberg was just a little seal. They had seen this a lot of times in the years that they had sailed these waters, after all. However, Allan wouldn’t let the matter go. He thought something about it was strange.

Closer Look

What Could It Be?

After looking at the animal through his binoculars, Allen informed the crew that it didn’t have the appearance of a seal at all. Something about how it moved was not the same. After inspecting it more, the whole crew agreed that something about the animal was definitely strange. Allen might be right to think that it was something else. They decided to find out.

Getting Closer

Although they still had half a day of fishing to do, they all decided to take an even closer look at the animal on the iceberg. Their curiosity was piqued. They had to find out what was exactly on top of that iceberg, so they chose to have a closer look. The temperature was starting to drop and the wind was picking up when their boat got closer.

The Investigation

It was risky to deviate from their usual route, but Allen managed to convince his friends that they should do just that. If they didn’t do that, they may never find out what the animal was and how bad its situation was.

Approaching

They decided that they must find out. While the other two didn’t think that the situation was a dire one, Allen convinced them to check things out. They would, after all, regret leaving a suffering aminal out in the cold to die. With their decision made, the crew sailed closer to the iceberg.

Chilling Temperatures

It immediately became apparent that the animal that was stranded on the iceberg had fur and was soaked through. With the wind chilling the whole place, the small creature wouldn’t make it much longer. In that instant, they knew that they had to do their best to help. Even though they had no idea what the animal was, they still reacted automatically in the most compassionate way possible.

Advance Slowly

It was vital that they take things slow as they move towards the ice-filled water. A single piece of ice under their boat could damage it, or worse, cause it to capsize and leave them stranded as well, just like the animal that they were trying to save. They didn’t want that to happen, so they were alert in keeping an eye out for dangerous objects.

Constant Watch

To make things more hectic for the trio, the waves started to get higher and higher, too. The boat’s movement became more precarious and Mallory had to warn the others to be more careful. The three felt a mix of curiosity and excitement as they got nearer. However, they still need to tread carefully. Two members of the crew kept a close watch on potential dangers in the water.

Unfortunately, the wind started to get stronger and the waves rocked the boat as well as the iceberg. While the crew could handle the difficult waves, they got worried about the animal’s reaction to the now moving iceberg.

They had to worry about more than just the ice blocks in the water this time. Mallory was scared that the poor creature would decide to jump into the water out of fear. If only they could move a bit closer, she could see enough to figure things out.

Tricky Circumstances

To stay near the iceberg, they had to increase the speed of their boat. This made navigating near the iceberg even trickier. This dangerous situation became even more so due to the fact that it was getting dark soon and they would have to go back to shore before that happened.

Getting A Glimpse

As they approached the iceberg, the trio got a better look of the animal. They could see that its shape was similar to that of a dog and had four legs just like a dog. However, they were quite sure that it was not a puppy that got its way on top of the ice.

The animal was clearly shivering helplessly and was soaking wet. They quickly went to work to save the poor creature. They had to do whatever it took to make sure that the animal didn’t freeze to its death. They did it although they knew that things would become more dangerous for them.

Arctic Fox

As they moved closer, they finally got to see the animal clearly and were staring at it. It was an Arctic fox. They didn’t have enough time to speculate how the fox got there. The animal was already so cold and weak that birds were circling above it. They had to move quickly or the little fox would soon be lunch!

Not A Family Pet

It appeared that other animals were aware that the fox was dying, so they made a choice quickly. They made up their minds to rescue it and help it live a little bit longer. The crew decided to put their fishing on hold until they have a better idea about the whole situation. With their minds made up, they went on to do it even though it was dangerous for them as well.

Good Intentions

The three didn’t know if the creature had contact with humans in the past because they knew that animals in the wild could become vicious when cornered. Although their intention was to save it, they may lose the chance to do so if it wouldn’t let them.

A Wild Fox

The first thing that the three friends wanted to do was to tame the animal. With hands stretched out, they approached it while talking quietly, calling the animal to them. It was exactly what would make a tame animal run toward them.

Getting Away

But the Arctic fox was far from a tamed house pet and it tried to get away from them. With no other place to run to, it was virtually trapped on a piece of ice. It just sat there staring at the strange humans who were reaching out to it. The fox would clearly not approach them, but they weren’t going to leave it either.

A Waiting Game

After failing multiple times to lure the fox, the crew finally realized that the fox would not be moving towards them. They needed to be patient and continue waiting. So, they did exactly that and settled in.

Progress

Finally, after they had decided to rest for a while and kept the boat floating next to the iceberg, the fox took its first step toward their boat. It obviously realized that the boat may give it a chance to escape. The question was whether it would trust them enough to go with them on board.

The Rescue

The fox approached the fishermen’s boat slowly. However, it was already too weak to leap from the iceberg to the boat. Allen leaned over and carefully picked it up from the ice, bringing it aboard. Finally, they had the fox on the boat with them. However, the fox was not safe yet.

Although it might have been safer on the boat, the fox was alarmed at their approach and suddenly jumped back into the water. The trio looked on in horror as the small animal struggled to swim through the cold water to get back to the iceberg. The three fishermen were not willing to let it go. They followed the boat until it ran out of energy.

That’s when Allan scooped it out of the water carefully and brought the fox back into their boat. It was still scared and it immediately moved away from them, huddling in a corner, very wet and cold. The fox’s situation had become much worse than it was and the three fishermen were worried.

Unanswered Questions

The cold brought by the wind ruffled the animal’s wet fur. While Cliff and Allan had towels ready to dry and warm the freezing creature, they were also worried that it would attack them. How long would it take for the animal to trust the fishermen? How long would it last out in the cold high seas? They were anxious to find out.

Saving A Fox

It was imperative that they warm the fox up before it died of the cold. Mallory took it upon herself to steer them back to the shore, but they were far from the shore, several miles from it, as a matter of fact, and it would take some time for them to reach it.

Time Is Of The Essence

Time was not something that the fox had a lot of. Both Cliff and Allan were just observing the animal, waiting for a chance to make it warm. As they watched the small creature, their minds were also trying to look for other ways to help the animal and make it more comfortable on their boat.

A Warm Bed

Mallory thought of an idea on how to keep the fox warm. She thought that they should make a nest for it. The other two could only see sawdust in their boat and used it to keep the little critter warm. They gathered the sawdust and made a warm bed for the fox, which actually worked well in insulating heat.

They placed the sawdust in a plastic bin where they planned to keep the fox for its warmth and security. The fox immediately buried itself in the wood flakes. An Adjusted Course

They still had some 30 minutes of travel to do when Cliff took over the wheel. He saw that an adjustment in their course was needed in order for them to arrive at their destination sooner. Terrified & Tired

Suddenly, the boat hit a wave and the fox woke up in alarm. It was obviously terrified and tired. They all decided to give it some of their catch to try to calm it. They were hoping that the animal would take the food that they would offer to help it regain some strength.

Their attempt to make the fox warm and comfortable on its makeshift bed was a success. So, Mallory got some fish and crab to feed the fox but it refused to eat what she offered. It would definitely be hungry, right? But what kind of food would it eat?

No Crabs, Please!

Mallory went straight to the galley to get some food for the humans on the boat. She found some Vienna sausages, soaked them in water, and offered them to the fox. This, apparently, was to the fox’s liking and it happily ate the sausages that she offered, probably eating for the first time in days.

After it had its fill of the sausages that Mallory offered, the fox went back to sleep and stayed asleep until they reached the shore. The noise alarmed it again and Mallory had to keep it calm. After the trio arrived safely on the Canadian shore, they needed to decide what to do with the fox. It had already eaten and was currently warm and dry. It would be the last part of the fox’s journey. Again, Mallory got an idea.

The Perfect Spot

She remembered a spot that would be perfect for the fox to be released on and the location wasn’t far from the docks. The place had no lurking danger around it and it would be the best place for the fox to slowly go back to nature, on its own for the most part, while they watched.

The place where they planned to release the fox was lovely and safe, exactly what the animal needed. What made it even better was the small dog house built there which was just 10 minutes away from the dock.
