Some roads are made only for the toughest among us. Do you think you can brave these roads? Mind you these roads are not the regular variety. For one thing, they are all unbelievably deadly.
Have you ever seen a bridge ricketier than this one? We highly doubt it. Only a single vehicle can pass through this space. On top of that, the planks were made up of wood. There are no railings there either.
Not A Fun Time
If you ever have to pass through this road, you better hope that no snowstorm will ever happen while you are there. After all, you will get stranded the rest of the way should that happen to you.
We know that it can be hard to tell. However, there is a road right on the side of the huge mountain. In 1977, the road was created by thirteen villagers with the use of hammers and chisels.

The incredible length of the road also means that there are many miles where you will see absolutely nothing but desolate land. Those areas can be dangerous. If you run into an emergency, tough luck.
Paso de Los Libertadores
The Paso de Los Libertadores is a road that passes through the border between Chile and Argentina. It might be scenic, but do not be fooled. This is a perilous road that you will want to buckle up for.
Those Darn Turns
Wait until you hear that there are around 20 hairpin turns along this route. Speedsters and daredevils, you better watch it. This road has been the sight of a number of crashes in the past.
Col Du Chaussy
This is not only a super windy and twisty road, but it is also a very narrow one. The photo below does not do it any justice at all! Driving is already scary enough on its own, but this is a whole new level.
Take It Easy
When you go down the hill, you will have to slide down a rather significant slope. Thanks, but no thanks. If you have a fear of heights, this is not the place for you to be whatsoever.
Don’t you just love the name of this stretch of road in Pakistan? It was named that way because it looks like the place where fairies live. This is a pretty accurate name for it, don’t you think?
Is It Magical?
This is rather terrifying to see. Can you imagine just how terrifying it must be to drive here? This road is essentially just a long stretch of gravel without safety rails. Yikes! It’s a hard pass from us.
Needless to say, a road that spans more than 14 miles would be truly dangerous. One of the things that make it so difficult would be the oxygen levels. They are only half of what you get at normal sea level.
Watch Out For Landslides
As you can probably imagine, landslides are pretty common occurrences on this highway as well. This is something all drivers should look out for if they ever find themselves on this long stretch of road.
Cat And Fiddle Road
Cat and Fiddle Highway has a reputation for being a “widow maker” because so many people have died in this spot. There are plenty of hairpin turns as well as sharp ups and downs that make things harder.
Did you know that this road was, at one point, considered to be the deadliest one in the world? Around 200 to 300 people have died as tried to hike here. Tight turns, mudslides, and awful weather conditions are the culprits here. The road is not used all that much anywhere, though some people take it “for fun”.
Zoji La Pass
After every winter, it takes the people here two months to clear all the snow in the roadways. It is a risky journey that goes as high as 11,000 feet. The roads are so narrow that a single car can barely pass here.
Built in 1969, the sketchy road below was built to connect two cities in Afghanistan. Even though it has never undergone any maintenance and is gradually deteriorating, it is still used on a daily basis. This is actually a high traffic area that has no speed limit!
They also call it the “Highway of Death”, and we think you can guess why. It is the busiest highway in all of Brazil. A lot of criminals like to hang out here and then surprise unsuspecting motorists. Even worse, the heavy fog and tall mountains make it hard to see what lies ahead. It is not fun at all!
Here is an 18-wide road in the Philippines. Flat and paved, what could possibly be the issue here? It is just plain human error. People drive like animals. On average, there are 3 to 5 accidents each day.
How pretty is this? Sadly, it is also very dangerous. The road boasts of a very steep drop off that would deliver you right into the sea. It only has two lanes, so it is impossible to bypass a slowpoke driver.
When the sun has gone down, it is illegal for anyone to drive on Karnali Highway. A lot of people take Jeeps when they have to drive on this road. Why? There are lots of unmaintained parts and falling rocks.
This is a road in Alaska that can get icy. The weather here can change in no time whatsoever! A lot of the time, the only ones that can make it through this route would be giant trucks.
Ruta Nacional 5
Ruta Nacional 5 goes through vast expanses of deserts, which is dangerous enough as it is. On top of that, there are also very sharp drops that will jolt you awake at the very least.
Cotopaxi Volcano Road
Here is a road that will take you to the top of a volcano! Not just any volcano, but an active one at that. It has erupted around 50 times since 1738. That does not sound appealing to us…
The Trans-Siberian Highway is around 7,000 miles long. There are a lot of unfinished or unmaintained parts, so you can expect it to get bumpy one way or another. It is especially dangerous when it is snowy.
Skippers Canyon Road
How would you feel about driving through a 140-year-old unpaved road teetering on the edge of a mountain? Yeah, we do not think it sounds like the most comfortable idea ever as well. Hard pass.
Bayburt of Yolu
It is already bad enough that it is unpaved. What makes it even worse is that it is a gravel road! If you want to go a little faster than usual, the gravel can move out from beneath you and hurdle you down.
While the Furka Pass looks like a mightily terrifying road to take on, we have to admit that it is very beautiful as well. You can find this scenic but scary road in the Swiss Alps. You decide if it is worth it.
This is a pretty popular road among hikers who visit Colorado. This road is just wide enough for two vehicles. Just make sure to watch out since there are lots of blind roads. Accidents are pretty common.
Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road
We have no idea how a car can even navigate all these turns. However, you should keep in mind that there are gorgeous views waiting for you at the top of the mountain. We’d prefer cable cars, however.
Gorges Du Dades
It is not a good idea to take on this road if you are not an experienced driver. This road in Morocco is often used for the transport of goods since there are no towns nearby. The view is great, however.
Amalfi Coast Highway
The Amalfi Coast is truly gorgeous no matter what time of the year you visit. Its coastal route will show you great views of mountains and the water. The only catch is that it can be hard to navigate there.
This is a very valuable road to the Indian Army. This road is well-maintained, but there are factors that make it dangerous too. For one thing, landslides are common. Many people get altitude sickness as well.
Colorado 550 also gets called the “Million Dollar Highway”. Why? Well, it costs at least one million dollars a mile to maintain it. This road goes into the mountains. It is pretty narrow at certain points.
The Karakoram Highway is located in a remote area. It is good if you are looking for amazing views, interesting biodiversity, and borderless cliffs. And have we mentioned the landslides on top of all that?
Road to Heaven
You probably think that the Road to Heaven is going to be nothing but nice… In reality, this road has received that name because it will send you into the afterlife in no time at all. Oops!
Fair enough, this road in the United Kingdom is not the most dangerous one on the list. However, it is still one very deadly highway. This stretch of road actually boasts of many head-on collisions.
Called the “Troll Ladder”, this road is a gorgeous highway that has been sculpted into its natural landscape. How beautiful is that? It is actually the most visited road in the country. We can see why.
Do you know why “hairpin” turns are called that? If you have no idea what the answer to that is, allow us to clue you in. It is impossible for you to go more than 20 mph without hurtling over the edge here.
Killar To Pangi Road
Wow, is this place actually real? It might be hard to believe that it is true, but we promise you that this is the case. The photo below is completely horrifying, we know. It looks incredibly easy to fall off…
Carretera Federal 1 Highway
Thanks to the lack of shoulders and all the blind corners, this road is pretty dangerous. It is not unusual to spot broken guard rails. They are there because people have missed their turns. Yikes.
It seems like drivers enjoy going down the road and pretending it is a racetrack. Aside from that, drunk driving is not rare on this highway. In a single year alone, 320 people have died here.
Many people drive on this road if they want to take a shortcut between Walachia and Transylvania. What makes it so difficult is that the oxygen falters a lot. You should expect to get altitude sickness as well.
Le Passage du Gois, France
This is one unique road since it is, quite literally, in the ocean. There are even a couple of hours in a day when you cannot go through the road. When it is high tide, you should look for another route.
It is difficult to maintain the Patiopoulo-Perdikaki Road because it is so long and out of the way. You will see a lot of potholes here. Parts of the road have even fallen off. It is a scenic drive but also very stressful.
US Route 431
This is actually one of the worst highways you will find in America. No matter where you are, you will probably see a cross that is dedicated to a person whose life ended on that road.
The Barton Highway
This has earned a reputation for being the worst highway in all of Australia. In 2015, there were 300 recorded deaths here. Even though it is not that long, human error seems to be the culprit here.
It might sound cool to drive across the desert, but it is not all that it is cut out to be. You will have to deal with intense heat, risky weather, and unpaved roads. That sounds like a recipe for disaster to us.
Halsema Highway is a road full of landscapes. There are not many safety guards on this road, but it is not for a lack of effort. Buses normally travel through this road, but quite a few have fallen over in the past.
Strada Delle 52 Gallerie
You better not be claustrophobic when you go through this road. You will see around 52 tunnels along the route. Mix that with all the unpaved roads, and you will get an easy “Nope!” from us.
Taroko Gorge Road
This is located in a gorgeous part of Hualien, Taiwan. You should keep in mind that it is quite dangerous. For one, the roads get flooded. When this happens, the sharp turns become deadly and mudslides happen.
Canning Stock Route
Road signs? Nope. Guard rails? Nah. Mile markers? Forget about it! Why is the Canning Stock Route even considered a proper road in the first place when it is like this? It sure beats us.
Here is a road that is only a car wide. Aside from this, it is full of steep drops as well. Do not speed down the road like others have in the past! Things did not go very well for those folks.
