Teacher Writes Disrespectful Comment On This Boy’s Homework, His Dad Finally Reacts

One afternoon a 2nd-grade boy by the name of Kamdyn Piland came home from school, right away his parents noticed something was different. They could see he was very upset and teary, so they immediately asked him what was wrong, he quietly shrugged it off. That did not stop his parents from worrying and continued to ask him questions until he eventually told them what was wrong. He dug in his bag for a piece of paper from that day, they were in awe so see that the note from his teacher was really mean criticism.

Unhelpful Piece Of Criticism

Upon closer inspection, his father, Chris, saw it was not a comment that was in any way beneficial to Kamdyn. He immediately took it as a personal strike on his son. He was so mad, that he refused to let it go. His reaction to this went viral overnight and the internet took a stand as well. But what did the teacher write to begin with?

A Regular Kid

According to Chris, Kamdyn was just an ordinary kid. He wasn’t overly energetic, he didn’t wallow in video games, TV shows, and sugary foods. It was a big surprise for the whole Piland family when they learned their son was getting all kinds of criticism from one teacher at school.

Something Serious

After looking at the note again, Chris started to seriously think that something was going on with Kamdyn. He began to investiage the matter and what he found out was truly startling.

A Regular School

Kamdyn attends Valley View Elementary School and at the moment is in 2nd grade. Valley View is just another regular public school. Kamdyn was exactly what most people call ‘an overachiever’, but that didn’t make the situation okay.

Many Complaints

Kamdyn’s parents really believed that he was doing relatively well in school. They wouldn’t have guessed that any major problems might be going on. It was only since the school year started that Kamdyn’s parents were receiving complaints.

Good At School

In so many ways, Kamdyn was just a regular young kid, but his father always tried to make sure that his son was a good student. More or less all children really dislike doing their homework, that’s nothing unusual right? But every day,  Kamdyn had no problem completing his assignments. That all changed when 2nd grade started.

He Couldn’t Just Watch

For Chris to just sit back and watch his son failing his classes was not so easy for Chris. He understood it was time for him to act on the matter and get down to the bottom of what exactly was going on.

Struggling In School

Under no circumstances was Kamdyn considered unintelligent, but Chris could see his son was struggling. His grades started sliding more and more, but for one minute Chris didn’t think that it was in his son’s character to do this badly in school.

Way Too Harsh

Kamdyn’s teacher was Alyssa Rupp Bohenek, she was the one who wrote the nasty comment on his paper.  The note read , “Absolutely pathetic”! He answered 13 in 3 minutes! Sad!” Chris thought this comment was much too harsh for a second-grader.

Ms. Alyssa

Alyssa Bohenek had been teaching at the school for a while already and earned the reputation of being quite difficult to please. But that was no excuse to write what she did. Kamdyn was in her class, and perhaps the two were no seeing eye to eye.

His Teacher

Every move that Kamdyn made caught the eye of Alyssa, and every mistake he made he received a tough written warning. Naturally, all the negative feedback he received had a huge impact on the little boy’s confidence and self-esteem.

Addressing Bad Grades

For a lot of parents, its not exactly pleasant to hear that their child is doing badly in school. Nevertheless, it’s always better that the problem is addressed as soon as possible. It’s always been questionable as to how one should deal with bad grades.

Tough Love

Studies have suggested that spending more quality time with children and working with them through the lessons will be a great help. In many instances, extra lessons may also be called for. ‘Tough love’, however, does not work, especially on kids this young.

Constructive Criticism Please

Even for grown adults, negative feedback can be very overwhelming. And most times in life, we, unfortunately, have to deal with it. We’re sure it can be agreed that criticism given in a constructive or professional way is much more valuable.

A Huge Blow

For people who are constantly being criticized for no real reason will usually more than not have a damaged self-esteem. Even more so when it is given to a young child by an authority figure.

As A Mentor

Being a mentor is not the easiest thing to do, but one thing is certain mentors have to be excellent role models above all. After all, a teacher isn’t just someone that delivers lessons and lectures.

A Leader

It’s also so essential for these people to make sure they become good leaders and impact their students in the best possible way. But from the way things looked, Bohenek wasn’t taking much responsibility for this duty.

Not Helpful Whatsoever

It wouldn’t be fair for us to judge Chris for being unhappy with the comment on his son’s teacher on his maths homework. It was not necessary and her approach was out of line. Why did she think this was the best way to deal with it? Surely insulting a 2nd grader is so degrading.

Only Made Things Worse

Of course, Chris only wanted the very best for his son, and it was clear to him that this type of conduct was not going to help him at all. There was more of a chance this would actually just make things much worse for Kamdyn.

A Recurring Problem

Perhaps, she was having an off day when she wrote the comment and it had been the only negative comment that Ms. Bohenek had given the entire year. If this was the case, Chris may have rethought his reaction. However, it turns out that the teacher had been sending the same kind of feedback since the beginning of the school year to many other students in the class.

Far Too Personal

But for Chris, he considered the comments to be too personal. He said to his wife, if the teacher had taken a different approach and made the comment slightly more suitable then perhaps talking to the teacher directly was not necessary.

Took To Facebook

What kind of teacher would call their own student “pathetic” anyway? Chris knew that teachers needed to treat all their students in a fair manner. There was no need for questions, teachers who are more encouraging towards their students often see better results in terms of their grades.

Payback

Chris was looking to raise the issue of his son being humiliated by his teacher. So, he simply made a post on Facebook to condemn this so-called teacher for the behavior she’d shown towards his son.

His Viral Post

In his post, he explained what had happened and posted an image of the note that his son’s teacher had written. Chris was shell-shocked to see how quickly his post gained attention. It seemed as if the whole country was waiting to hear about the saga that was unfolding in the school his son attended.

Everyone Disapproved

The reactions and comments that Chris received a lot of positive feedback. So many people disapproved of the harsh words the teacher wrote to Kamdyn. In a way, Kamdyn and Chris were shell-shocked by all the comments they received.

Her Responsibility

A teacher’s responsibility is not only to ensure that her students excel in the classroom but it’s important that they are happy all round. Being a teacher is not the easiest task, but its no doubt a really crucial job.

Helping children succeed in life is a lot more challenging than most people think. But Chris knew that the fact that Ms. Alyssa wrote the comment she did could not exactly be justified. Kamdyn was just a young boy who wanted to learn.

Let’s admit it, learning is one of the best parts of becoming a human being. Not to mention, the age kids learn is a crucial time in their lives. It’s so important that we all new skills, abilities, and tasks in order to become independent in the future.

No One Likes Negativity

Another alternative thing to remember is that learning is the most efficient when done in a creative and inspiring way. Negativity surely wont help anyone. The only thing that could come out of it would be damage to the person and their life.

Launching A Petition

After posting on Facebook, Chris felt that he had accomplished something and was ready yo move on. However, it seemed as if the internet wasn’t moving on from the topic so quickly. In practically no time, someone launched an online petition that called for Bohenek to be fired.

Rallying Behind Him

Chris couldn’t believe the way all these strangers were defending him and his son. He didn’t once think that this story would mean so much to other people, let alone so many of them. It truly warmed his heart to see people stand up for his son.

Endangering Her Career

The petition turned the story into a serious situation. It meant that Bohenek might be out of a job if she didn’t find a way to protect herself from all the backlash she was getting. At this point, Chris was still upset enough that he wanted her to be fired.

The Line Has Been Drawn

It seemed like the best option for the future of his son as well as for the other kids who went to his school. There are times that a line has to be drawn. This was exactly that kind of moment. The teacher simply went too far.

Teaching How To Learn

When you’re a teacher, it’s crucial to keep in mind that you’re doing so much more than just teaching the material to the students. One of the most underrated parts of being a teacher is encouraging the students to enjoy learning about new things.

If a teacher is able to do this, then the other parts of being a teacher will be no problem at all. As soon as the students understand the process itself, they tend to understand the information better and quicker. Spreading negativity and anger does nothing in a classroom.

In Response

Once the petition went up on behalf of Kamdyn, it got about 10,000 signatures. However, some teachers started to stand up for Bohenek. They claimed that she didn’t deserve to get fired for what she had done.

Reaction

With regards to how the teacher made 7-year-old Kamdyn feel, he had a lot to say on the subject. When asked about it, he said, “She made me really sad and upset. I was really mad. And [it was] really mean to do.” No kid should feel this way, especially as a result of their own teacher’s words.

Seven-Year-Old

Later, Chris spoke to more news outlets, saying, “You don’t write that on anybody’s paper, let alone a little 7-year-old, second grader’s paper. It said on the top of it that he answered only 13 of them in 3 minutes and that it was absolutely pathetic with a sad face”. “It broke my heart,” Kamdyn added.

Unprofessional

Chris had plenty to say with regards to what happened. He was livid about the whole nightmare. “I believe what you wrote on his paper was extremely unprofessional and just very rude and she messaged me back and said she was sorry I felt that way,” he explained.

Punished Not Fired

The school did agree that the teacher had done something very damaging to a young child. And defitnely felt that the teacher only had to be reprimanded for what she had done. They considered firing her was a bit of an exaggeration

Update

Adults along with teachers and parents are those who shape these little kids into what they’re going to be in the future. The school made a decision to look further into the matter and ensure that justice was served. Chris posted an update, saying, “Thanks to all the efforts and support of the dedicated people who signed and shared this petition, I’m happy to announce that the teacher in question is currently being investigated by the Valley View school board.”

Superintendent

According to a news outlet, the school’s superintendent, Rose Minniti, was made aware of the comments written on Kamdyn’s assignment. Following a meeting with the Valley View School District and the teacher, an investigation was started.

What’s Best

In response to the media, Minniti said, “As always with everything, we’re going to try to do what’s best for the students and what we need to do for the employee under investigation”. She continued to say, “It’s a personnel issue and the results of that are not going to be dictated by social media. It’s going to be dictated by the facts and evidence.”

We all hope that something will emerge from this and justice will be done. Still, loads of people all around the world are calling for this teacher to be fired. In fact, the petition had already gathered over 20,000 signatures! How amazing, right?

Some Blamed Him

Many of the people who had actually taken the teacher’s side decided to turn the whole story around and blame it all on Chris and his parenting techniques. They said he should rather spend less time on social media and more time with his children.

Helping With Homework

They persisted and said this wouldn’t have happened at all if Chris would have simply helped his son with his homework in the first place. However, at the end of the day, most people who read the story agreed that Bohenek was the one in the wrong here.
